Chapter Eight

Felicity normally walked to school quickly. It was cold and at times she hated the snow, but it wasn’t that far from her apartment on Main Street to the elementary school. It took more time and effort to warm the car up—and sometimes shovel the alleyway—than to just walk. But as they got downstairs, she wondered if Lane would rather drive. Or if he’d say good-bye here. He could do that.

She felt awkward and realized he probably did too. She was ready for some time away to put it all into perspective. She’d spent the entire night lying next to him, wanting to ask him questions but staying silent in case he was finally sleeping.

“Do you want me to scrape the ice from your car?” he asked.

“No. I’m going to walk to school.” Her school bag was heavy, loaded down with some cookies she’d baked on Saturday for her students, as well as some Christmas decorations that she had for the kids to color during their downtimes during the school day.

She’d never really thought about what she wanted to be when she grew up, but she had to admit being a teacher suited her. She loved it.

She was trying to distract herself from Lane and doing an okay job of it. From the corner of her eye she watched him. Every time she looked at him she was reminded of the fact that he hadn’t kissed her since last night. She remembered the feel of his body against hers and her lips started tingling. She wanted to kiss him again.

He settled his knitted skullcap on his head and pulled on his shearling coat. He looked at her and she caught her breath. His face was all angles and masculine beauty and she remembered how he’d looked naked in her apartment last night.

Mine.

She wanted to claim him as hers but if last night had shown her anything it was that they still had a long way to go before they were a couple. They both had things they were hiding. Both were trying to make things seem as good as they could while sweeping the dirt of real life under the carpet.

She knew better than to start anything with him while she was in this state. In the past she’d always had a boyfriend or a group of girlfriends to blunt the attentions but this year…she’d isolated herself. Drawn further and further into her shell to avoid facing the truth. She’d changed and she wasn’t sure how to deal with it.

She wanted to claim Lane but she wasn’t sure she had the right to. He’d told her she was the first person he’d slept with since his injury and she knew that was significant. She wanted to be worthy of it. Not just someone who was running from loneliness and desperately clinging to this hot as sin cowboy who’d seen more pain than anyone should in one life.

He wasn’t hers.

But she wanted him to be. Now she had to convince herself she deserved him.
